Next To My Bed: Catherine Cohen

Welcome to our latest installment of Next to My Bed, a feature on Hill House Home's 40 Winks Blog that takes an up close and personal look at what some of our friends keep next to their bed.

NYC-based comedian/actress Catherine Cohen is the co-host of cult-favorite sex and love podcast, SEEK TREATMENT, and can be seen weekly, every Wednesday night, at Club Cumming. Next year, you can catch Cohen alongside the likes of Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani in the upcoming romantic comedy Lovebirds. She’s  unwaveringly hilarious, has perfected a winged liner, and has been told she talks in her sleep. Here, she joins us for Next To My Bed.

What's side of the bed do you sleep on?

I sleep on the right side -- I guess it's the side closest to the bathroom because have to pee, like, 4000 times every night.

What can you not sleep without?

I would say four pillows. I need them around me so I can put my leg up one.

What do you have next to your bed?

I have a dresser next to my bed. It has a big, big, big stack of books I've started and not finished, a hair Scrunchie, and then I have a little keepsake box with some letters in it and some crystals on it. If I get a nice little heartfelt note or something I want to remember I just put it in a little box.

What's the strangest thing that you keep near your bed?

Let's take a look! I just opened this drawer...I have this drawer where I keep condoms and my vibrator and stuff. And there's a swim cap in here. And I'm wondering why there's a swim cap in there. It's neon pink. I got into swimming laps and am disorganized, so somehow it ended up in here.

What do you absolutely need next to your bed?

Sadly, I feel like my phone all nice and plugged in. My phone's always next to my bed and I have a super long charger so I can just lay down just swipe until I feel validated. I always check it before I go to bed and it's always the first thing in the morning.

What do you look at first: Instagram or email?

First is e-mail because if there's a work thing I have to deal with, that's going to be an e-mail or text. And then once I've made sure there's nothing pressing I can see if I got any crazy DMs or whatever.

What is your nighttime routine in five steps or less?

Oh, God, I wish I had one! I'm so bad at routine. Generally my show is late at night, so I kind of stumble home late and usually, if I have a really late show, I'll just take all my clothes off, leave them on the floor and pass out with my makeup on. If I'm trying to be good, then I try and wash my face and have some tea...but that's maybe, like, twice a month that I do that.

Are you like super proud of yourself when you do?

Yeah, I feel like an American hero.
