Nyakio Grieco began her namesake skincare line in 2002, inspired by her her Kenyan roots and commitment to sustainability. But she wasn’t going to stop at simply having a successful Target-carried, cult-favorite beauty brand. Grieco teamed up with Patrick Herning to launch Thirteen Lune in December 2020, an e-commerce site designed specifically to “inspire the discovery of beauty brands created by Black and Brown founders that resonate with people of all colors.”
But the goal of Thirteen Lune is loftier then just helping you find your next favorite mascara. Grieco and the team at Thirteen Lune are committed to being a “vehicle for change, creating a space for authentic allyship and taking inclusiveness to a new level."
Here, she shares what’s next to her bed (and yes, there’s a lengthy list of beauty products you’ll have trouble not adding to cart.)
What side of the bed do you sleep on?
I always sleep on the right side of the bed.
What can you not sleep without?
Lauren Napier Conversation Chic Scarf and multiple pillows. I’m a pillow fanatic!
What is currently next to your bed?
A lamp and nightstand. [On it]: A Shani Darden Sculpting Wand, nyakio Maracuja & Yangu Rescue Oil, Daily Oracle Book, Justice Bodan Candle, Sara Happ's The Dream Slip Lip Balm and more products I use in my nighttime routine. I also keep a hand sculpted self-love charm by Justice Bodan. It’s a totem that I hold in my hand before I go to bed that comes with this message: Hold this in your hand to remind yourself how wonderful you are. I love it so much!
What is the strangest thing that's next to your bed?
My passport. I love to travel so it gives me comfort knowing that even though we’re sheltering at home during this pandemic, I can still dream of all the places I’d love to go once we’re able to.
What would you not be able to sleep without being next to your bed?
Reading glasses for when I wake up and a fan.
Do you keep any electronics next to your bed?
I charge my electronics under my bed so they are out of sight.
What is your nighttime routine in 5 steps or less.
As the founder of nyakio Beauty and Co-Founder of Thirteen Lune, I take my bedtime routine very seriously! :)
I believe in double cleansing so I use my nyakio Sweet Almond Cleansing Balm first, then Shani Darden Cleansing Serum. I follow up with my nyakio Maracuja & Yangu Rescue Oil and use the Shani Darden Sculpting Wand which uses sound therapy to sculpt and tighten the skin, while also giving myself the most relaxing facial massage. I follow up with a face mask. Right now I’m loving the Joanna Vargas Forever Glow Anti-Aging Face Mask. I add a little Charlotte Mensa Manketti Hair Oil to my scalp and wrap my hair with my Lauren Napier Conversation Chic scarf. Lastly, I use some LIHA Idan Oil on my body for extra hydration or Goop Genes Body Butter.
